About The Flats ProjectHi there, I'm Nolan. I’ve spent my life trying to make "normal" shoes work.I grew up in Austin, TX under the care of a single mother who worked multiple jobs to take care of my brothers and I. Whenever we had the chance to buy shoes, we'd visit our local Walmart or Payless. It was always a nightmare trying to find shoes that fit.Normal shoe brands were never made for feet like mine. My feet were wide and flat, not through the toe-box, like typical so-called wide shoes, but wide through the mid-foot, where the edges were always too tight.I was always told, "your shoe will break in eventually."...just for my feet to blister and ache for days until the sides of the shoes gave way.Even now, as a professional dancer and an avid tennis enthusiast, finding shoes that are truly wide-fit is nearly an impossible task. I've spent hundred of dollars trying to find a shoe that wouldn't cause my feet pain - and even then, it was always a compromise.Recently, I decided to do something about it.Upon further research, turns out our feet aren’t the problem. The shoe industry is.We've been trying to fit our feet into shoes that are based around Eurocentric molds called "shoe lasts." These shoe lasts are the basis of what you see through modern shoes today, and you-guessed-it, not made for those who were born with structural flat feet. That's why I decided to make The Flats Project.People with flat, wide, and healthy feet deserve to walk around pain-free too. We deserve better. And now we get to build it.
